Viennese dynasties
Vienna (Wien) has been home to some of Austria’s most important people, including the Habsburg rulers – once Europe’s most important aristocratic royal families. Visit the impressive Hofburg Palace, the main residence of this influential dynasty. Another of Vienna’s key landmarks is Stephan’s Cathedral with a Romanesque and Gothic mix. Though you needn’t spend all your time indoors as Vienna is littered with green spaces to be enjoyed, such as the Wienerwald at Vienna’s western side, so if the weather’s good, get out there!
Hofburg Palace is a 5-minute walk from Michaelerplatz train station and Stephan’s Cathedral is a 5-minute walk from Stephan’s Platz train station.
Care for a cocktail at the city beach?
During the summer months join the bikini-clad locals at Vienna’s Sand in the City – an artificial city beach is created every year, near Lothringer Straße with cocktail bars, jacuzzis and swimming pools galore and much more guaranteed to ensure city-dwellers get a real beach treat. Land-locked Austria is determined to get a taste of coastal summer bliss! For later in the evening, Passage is a favourite underground hangout, usually offering funk, soul and techno tunes.
Sand in the City can be reached by a 5-minute walk from Schwarzenbergplatz tram stop. The nearest train station to Passage is Burgring and is just a 2-minute walk.
Park by day, opera by night
Why not spend a day at Prater Amusement Park, where you can take a leisurely ride on the Wiener Riesenrad (Giant Ferris Wheel) or take a stroll around the huge green park, where you’ll find Austrians enjoying the outdoors. New to the park is a Maddam Tussauds wax work museum. After spending the day exploring all the things that Prater has to offer, why not get a ticket for a mind-blowing performance at the Vienna Opera House, home to the famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Prater Amusement Park is a 5-minute walk from Stephansplatz station on the U-bahn and Vienna Opera House is a 10-minute walk from Karlsplatz station, also on the U-bahn.
