Inns, mosques and hamams

Baščaršija with the famous Sebilj fountain is Sarajevo’s historical and cultural centre. This old bazaar is home to several mosques and other historical Ottoman buildings. Visit Morica Han, Sarajevo’s only preserved Ottoman Inn, dating back to 1551. It’s now been converted into a restaurant. The National Museum is worth a visit, especially for the permanent exhibition detailing the country's struggle through almost four years of war. The city also has a number of Turkish baths, the most splendid of which is Gazi Husrev-beg hamam, also located at Baščaršija. It hasn’t been used since after WWI, but gives an insight to Bosnia’s old customs and way of life.

In front of the station you can take a tram, which will take you to Baščaršija. Alternatively a 20-minute walk following the river from the train station will get you there too.

Admire from afar

Look back at Sarajevo’s history and find that great turbulence once encompassed the capital, but now a bright future lies ahead. Sarajevo is surrounded by hills and it is from these that you can capture the best views across the city. It’s possible to stumble upon some old wooden mosques while you’re there too. Be sure to stick to designated paths as there may still be landmines lying in the undergrowth!

The public transport with trams, buses and trolleybuses is very efficient, however the city is small enough to see by foot.

Natural beauty

Just a stone’s throw from the capital is Vrelo Bosne, home to some of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s most unspoilt countryside. It is from here that the River Bosna springs from the foot of Mount Igman. Enjoy sparkling streams and whimsical waterfalls, while taking a stroll through this luscious park. On the approach to the grounds are a number of Austro-Hungarian buildings, which provide a hint into the country’s rich past.

Vrelo Bosne is just a 20-minute walk from the city centre.
