Mermaids and waterways
One of Copenhagen's most recognisable landmarks is the bronze statue of the Little Mermaid, based on Hans Christian Andersens fairytale. Visit a copy of the sculpture at the harbour (the original is at an unknown location). Why not board a boat tour that will take you passed Denmark’s prized statue and will give you a taste of the city via the hodge podge of waterways that wind through the city.
Boat tours start from Nyhavn, which is a 20-minute walk from Nørreport train station.
Danish royals and rollercoasters
Delve into royal Denmark at the four Amalienborg Palaces. Get there at around noon and you’ll witness the Changing of the Guard. If members of the monarch are home the routine will be accompanied by a musical procession. Next door is Frederikskirken church which was based on the design of St Peter’s in Rome. If historical sights get too much head to Tivoli Gardens – one of Europe’s favourite amusement parks, where rollercoasters and the world’s tallest carrousel will get the blood speeding through your veins.
The royal palaces are a 10-minute walk from Østerport st train station and the Tivoli Gardens is located just behind the city’s main train station.
Feed the heart
Copenhagen has an outstanding night scene with an eclectic array of bars and clubs dotted in and out of the city. Don’t miss Rust – Copenhagen’s favourite live music and clubbing venue. Established in 1989 this edgy party spot has a non-pretentious atmosphere and showcases some of the city’s best bands and DJs. Copenhagen is also famed for its great selection of culinary delights and mouthwatering Michelin-starred eateries. Clusters of excellent budget restaurants can be found around Nørrebro and Vesterbro.
