
Old and new
Finland’s capital has an excellent selection of museums to explore. Notable ones include City Museum, where you can uncover Finland’s rich history spanning more than 450 years. The National Museum is housed in a beautiful Medieval church-style building. Inside, exhibitions detail Finland’s history from the Stone Age through to the modern day. Also spend a few hours browsing around Kiasma Contemporary Art Museum, which usually has a range of performances, screenings, and workshops going on.
City Museum is a 10-minute walk from Kaisaniemi metro station, the National Museum is a 10-minute walk from Helsinki’s main train station and Kiasma is a 5-minute walk from Rautatientori metro.
Laketastic
Helsinki also offers great natural sights that make you forget you’re in the country’s largest city. Visit Lake Tuusula just on the outskirts of Helsinki and enjoy the tranquillity that this place oozes. Windsurfing and kite surfing are popular activities when it’s not too cold and during the snowy winter, the place is packed with locals effortlessly gliding across the frozen waters on ice skates. The lake seems to have inspiring powers as it shores have been home to a number of famous artists.
Lake Tuusula can be reached by bus from Helsinki’s centre.
Lively nightlife
Helsinki has an increasingly growing night scene. There’s a healthy live music scene and plenty of bars and clubs open their doors during the week as well as at weekends. In summer, there are often free pop and rock gigs held in Helsinki’s most splendid park, Kaivopuisto Park. Or, join the locals in one of the friendly beer terraces that spring up across the city. For the best views in town, make your way up to Ateljee Bar, where you’ll get to look over city, whilst enjoying a cocktail or two!
Kaivopuisto Park is 15-minute walk from the main train station and Ateljee Bar is a 5-minute walk from there.
