Hip Berlin

Europe’s youngest capital is growing in popularity thanks to a liberal mentality. Berlin is again Germany’s capital and all over this vibrant metropolis you can find signs and traces of German history and a strong desire to look forward to a bright future. Plus there’s a range of things to do in and around the city. The party scene is one of the most vibrant on the continent, drawing in party revellers wanting to give in to Berlin’s hedonistic allure. Check out Berlin’s clubbing scene, including techno-pumping Tresor and the infamous Kit Kat Club.

Both Tresor and the Kit Kat Club are a stone’s throw away from each other and just a 5-minute walk from the Heinrich-Heine-Straße metro.

Art and history side-by-side

Berlin’s blossoming art scene is like no other. Check out the graffiti-splashed Kunsthaus Tacheles on the Oranienburger Straße, once a Nazi prison that was left empty and later taken over by squatters. It’s now a trendy underground-esque art centre with a quirky mix of workshops, bars, cafés and an arthouse cinema. If you fancy savouring an awesome panorama of the whole city head up to the top of the Reichstag, the German federal parliament building – but avoid peak times where you may have to queue for hours!

The nearest Metro station to Tacheles is Oranienburger Tor, which is a 5-minute walk. The Reichstag is a 10-minute walk from the Bundestag Metro station.

Understand Berlin’s recent past

A visit to Berlin is a great opportunity to get your head around the atrocities of the Cold War. Join a walking tour that takes in two shelters used during this period and go to the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, where a tower stood to guard the most famous crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin. Little remains of the Berlin Wall since the fall, however you can visit a small section that remains standing – called Eastside Gallery. It is now a symbol of the horror and suffering that accompanied that dark period in German history.

The Checkpoint Charlie Museum is a 5-minute walk from the Kochstraße Metro station.
