Modern-day metropolis meets ancient wonder
Wander around Rome and stumble upon relic after relic. Perhaps one of the most staggering of Rome’s collection of historical architectural delights is the Colosseum. Open between 80 A.D. through to the 18th century to audiences of up to 50,000 Romans, the building witnessed thousands upon thousands of gory battles between gladiators, slaves, animals and criminals. Like most top attractions in Rome, expect lengthy queues. Contrasting with ancient Rome is the thrilling new gallery of modern art and architecture, Maxxi, located in the Flaminio district.
The Colosseum is 10 minutes by foot from Rome’s Termini train station. The Maxxi is a 5-minute walk from the Euclide metro station.
El Vaticano
Since 1929, the Vatican City has occupied a tiny speck of Rome, though don’t be tricked into thinking small means insignificant. In fact, what the Vatican lacks in size, it more than makes up for in its expanse of overwhelmingly spectacular buildings and artistic offerings. Wander around Basilica Papale di San Pietro (St Peter’s Basilica) and see what church-building used to really be about! Just outside the huge entrance doors is St. Peter’s Square, which you’ll probably recognise from TV clips showing crowds of Catholic worshippers (and tourists) congregating for the Pope’s public speeches. If you want to experience it for yourself, go along on a Wednesday morning.
The Vatican is 10 minutes by foot from Rome’s San Pietro train station.
Guarantee your return
Rome has a fairly chilled approach to nightlife, with the party spilling from the humming bars out onto the street. There’s also a good selection of clubs and discos to continue the night into the early hours. If you’ve fallen in love with Rome and want to improve your chances of a return visit, then make your way to the Fontani di Trevi (Trevi Fountain), where you’re invited to toss a coin over your shoulder into the fountain, apparently ensuring your return. Rome will not disappoint, though you may feel defeated by your attempt at consuming everything in one serving!
The Trevi Fountain is 20 minutes by foot from Rome’s Termini train station.
