Luxembourg City: city status, village charm
Luxembourg City seamlessly combines old and new. Take advantage of its diminutive size and view the city on foot or by bike. Take a relaxing stroll along the Chemin de la Corniche – a pedestrianised promenade known as “Europe’s most beautiful balcony”. Absorb the breathtaking vista of deep gorges and greenery, intertwined with the city’s historical remnants. And fit in a museum or two – especially popular is the Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean – and be amazed not only by its fantastic exhibitions but its unique contemporary architecture. Tiny but tasty wine region
A section of the Moselle Valley sits within Luxembourg’s borders and is home to Europe’s smallest vineyard and wine region. Dotted along the slopes of the valley are a number of quaint wine towns to mosey on down to. Worthy of a visit is Remich, above all to savour a mouth-watering wine tasting tour.
Remich can be reached by bus in about 30 minutes from Luxembourg’s main train station.
Savour the nightlife
Start the evening savouring culinary delights at one of the city’s Michelin-starred restaurants (Luxembourg has more Michelin stars per square metre than any other country!). Then head to the Grund area, at the foot of the city walls, where you’ll find a vibrant selection of bars and clubs that kick into life as the sun goes down. Within the neighbourhood check out this little evening gem – Café des Artistes. This small piano bar often has live music seeping through its walls and the smoke-stained ceiling adds to the nostalgic ambience.
The Grund area is a 15-minute walk from Luxembourg’s main train station.
Activity eldorado
North-east of the capital is the small picturesque town of Echternach, which is surrounded by a recreational park, offering a range of outdoor activities, including fishing, swimming and kayaking around Lake Sûre. There is also an abundance of walking trails through the magical Müllerthal forests. Hot air ballooning is a popular and thrilling way to take in much of Luxembourg’s spectacular surroundings in one serving and is like no other experience you’ll ever do.
To reach Echternach take a bus from Luxembourg’s main train station.
Castle charisma
Luxembourg is famed for its grandiose castles – some of Europe’s most spectacular. Clervaux, on the River Cleve is a good starting point for some castle-spotting. The beaming white-walled Clervaux Castle protectively peers over the town. Vianden is another town blessed with castle-charisma billowing from its hilltop. While you’re there take a ride on Luxembourg’s only chair lift for a bird-eye’s view of the city and surrounding countryside.
Clervaux can be reached by train and is a 15-minute walk from the centre. To get to Vianden take a train to Diekirch and then connect to a bus.
