Old Luxembourg
Another attraction worth a visit is the Grand-Ducal Palace, the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. Step inside and explore the opulent interior and extraordinary tapestries. Located on the city’s rocky outcrop, known as the 'Bock' is Luxembourg’s sturdy fortress. From here you can find the entrance to a sight not to be missed – the Bock Casemates. This incredible man-made underground labyrinth of tunnels and caverns makes for fascinating viewing. Luxembourg may be teeny in size but it’s not lacking in character.
The Grand-Ducal Palace and the Bock Casemates are a 20-minute walk from Luxembourg’s main train station.
A stone’s throw away
Luxembourg City is a great base from which to venture out to nearby places of interest. Just four kilometres east of the capital is Luxembourg’s American Cemetery and Memorial which provides a step into Luxembourg’s more recent history. This US Military cemetery is the resting place of over 5,000 service men and women who lost their lives during the liberation of Luxembourg in WWII. Luxembourg City’s romantic charms are able to rival those of Europe’s larger and more famous capitals.
The American Cemetery can be reached by bus from Luxembourg’s centre.
