Places to visit in Serbia

Although Belgrade (Beograd) isn’t one of Europe’s prettiest cities, it’s slowly shaking off its war-torn image and becoming an intriguing tourist destination. The city has a mish-mash of architectural styles thanks to the continuous destruction and rebuilding that has taken place over centuries. The Kalemegdan Fortress is one of the city’s best highlights. Serbia’s Fruška Gora National Park, sometimes referred to as 'Serbia’s gem' has a diverse range of flora and fauna which can be observed via the many hiking trails. Along the way there are a number of monasteries to stop at. If you want to treat yourself, Banja Koviljača could be just what you’re looking for. This spa town located in the west of Serbia has several sulphurous and iron-rich mineral springs – visit a spa centre and you can experience for yourself the remedial powers and feel like a new person!

Famed for its excellent nightlife, Belgrade is attracting party revellers from far and wide. The city is teeming with great places to drink and party, so there’s little chance of getting an early night. Visit Strahinjića Bana – a street with tons of cafes and bars, which has a buzzing atmosphere every day of the week. Another popular party zone is around the quay, where there are some great restaurants and clubs aboard the river boats.

One of Serbia’s main hives of outdoor pursuits is around Ada Ciganlija – a river island that was artificially turned into a peninsula. Located in the River Sava, this place is swarming with sunbathers and swimmers during the summer period. There are a number of activities to enjoy besides the decent sandy beaches – choose from kayaking, water-skiing, bungee jumping, paintballing and much more. During winter visit Serbia’s major ski resort: Kapaonik National Park – excellent slopes and a cheaper alternative to the Alps.

Novi Sad, just 17 kilometres north of Belgrade is a charming city with remnants of Austro-Hungarian rule. Rising up from the Danube’s banks is Petrovaradin Fortress. This wonderful monument is home to Serbia’s famous Exit music festival each year. In the southern part of Serbia lie some of the country’s finest monasteries. Studenica, was the first to be built and is regarded as the most splendid – not only from the outside but also from within its fresco-laden walls.
