Bratislava’s castle vista
For one of the best spots to ponder over the capital’s bizarre architectural jumble, make your way up to Bratislava’s hefty four-towered castle. Up high you’ll get an eyeful of Petržalka’s ugly housing blocks, made all the more hideous when contrasted with the old town’s superior structural airs. It may still be a city on the up, but you’re guaranteed good value for money, which will allow for plenty of colourful nights on the town. As a new member to the EU, this will be a city to watch out for.
Bratislava’s castle is a 25-minute walk from the main train station.
Chillout time
Slovakia and its capital may be land-locked but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the glorious summer weather. During July and August the Danube’s south bank, Tyršovo Nábrežie is transformed into a riverside beach haven thanks to a copious helping of sand – the ideal place to relax and cool down. Alternatively, if you want to avoid getting sand between your toes, make a beeline for Medická Záhrada – one of Bratislava’s luscious green parks. The city has ample opportunities for winding down and charging up.
The south bank is a 30-minute walk from Bratislava’s Petržalka train station. Medická Záhrada park is a 20-minute walk from the old town.
Bridge swing
For those seeking some adrenaline-pumping adventure a bridge swing should do the trick. Sign up for this memorable experience that will see you hurl yourself from a bridge (fully harnessed!) and free fall over the Danube. The 25 metres of rope you’re attached to will then have you swinging from side to side. It’s particularly popular with groups, especially stag dos. Afterwards, chill out and grab a bite in the UFO, a spectacular restaurant on top of the New Bridge (Nový Most).
The bridge swinging takes place just 10 minutes by foot from the centre. The restaurant on the New Bridge (Nový Most) can be reached by tram, get out at the the stop with the same name.
