Hilltop castle

Although Slovenia’s greatest pulling power comes from its magical landscape, be sure not to neglect its relatively unknown capital, Llubljana. It is the country’s biggest city and is the cultural, economic, and political centre of Slovenia. A popular attraction is Llubljana’s medieval castle, perched high up on the hill that overlooks the city. The funicular train will bring you to the top of Castle Hill, so all you have to worry about is exploring this area that has been settled on for hundreds of years. There are also various concerts and performances held at the castle during the year.

The funicular car up to Castle Hill is a 15-minute walk from the main train station.

Go wild

For animal lovers, Slovenia’s national zoo will have you cooing to your heart’s content. The zoo itself is located in beautiful natural surroundings. It is home to over 150 species of animal, including tigers, dolphins, elephants and snakes. For anyone who has ever fancied being a zoo keeper for the day, your wish could come true! For around €100, you can discover just what it involves to take care of the animals at Llubljana zoo!

The zoo is a 20-minute walk from the main train station.

Ljubljana legends

Another sight worth passing by is Dragon’s Bridge, which crosses Llubljanica river. Legend has it that Jason founded the city and it was here that he and the Argonauts killed the dragon. One of the four dragons is represented in statue-form. Llubljana may be small as capital cities go but it is oozing authenticity with plenty of things to explore. The charming Triple Bridge also has a few stories to tell, since it was once the main transit route between the countries of Northwestern and Southeastern Europe.

Dragon’s Bridge and Triple Bridge are both a 10-minute walk from the main train station.
