Railway services
Swedish regional and inter-regional trains have 1st and 2nd class cars with refreshments available on board and seats adapted for disabled travellers. Some trains also have a family car with a play corner including a slide etc, where children can play during the journey.
Bicycles are allowed on local tarins in the Skåne region and on Öresund trains serving the routes between Copenhagen and Gothenburg, Karlskrona and Alvesta. Bikes are not allowed on other trains.

SJ High Speed trains
SJ High Speed trains belong to the world’s most modern trains. They take you from city centre to city centre smoothly and efficiently with a top speed of 200 km/h (124 mph). The SJ High Speed train is well known for its high service and low sound level. It also goes directly to Copenhagen (Denmark) over the new railway bridge. All these High Speed trains also stop at København Airport, Kastrup. Seat reservations are compulsory.

SJ night trains
The SJ night train to Northern Sweden - distancing nearly 2,000 km - is one of Europe’s longest train routes. With one daily departure from Göteborg and two daily departures from Stockholm, the SJ night trains to Northern Sweden gives travelers an unparalleled chance to experience all of Sweden, from the rolling farmlands of the south to the arctic mountain regions of the north. The SJ night trains to Northern Sweden operate on the following route:
- Göteborg/Stockholm - Umeå/Luleå/Kiruna - Narvik
These SJ night trains are a traditional overnight train offering a variety of accommodations - seating, couchettes and sleepers.
- Couchette: 6 bunks in women’s or mixed-gender compartment. Bedding consists of hostel sheets and a blanket.
- Sleeper without in-room toilet and shower: 3 beds in women’s or men’s compartment. Bedding consists of a pillow, sheet, duvet, and duvet cover.
- Sleeper with in-room toilet and shower: 2 beds in single or double occupancy. The compartment holds 2 Dux® beds and is roomier than the regular sleeper. Bedding consists of a pillow, sheet, duvet, and duvet cover.
These night trains are also equipped with a traditional dining car serving breakfast, lunch and dinner to reasonable prices. Travelers may bring as much luggage as they themselves can carry aboard the SJ night trains (hazardous and overly bulky items are not permitted aboard). Skis count as luggage as long as they are encased. Bicycles are not permitted aboard SJ night trains due to safety regulations.
Scenic trains
The Inlandsbanan runs from Kristinehamn in the south and ends in Gällivare in the north. It has daily departures from the middle of June until the end of August. InterRail Passes are valid on Inlandsbanan. Seat reservation is recommended.

The Lapplandståget or 'Lapland train' starts in Sweden in either Malmö or in Göteborg and then continues to Stockholm. From there you head up north, past the Arctic Circle to the final destination Narvik. You can travel in coach or sleeping car (couchette). InterRail Passes are valid on Inlandsbanan. Reservation is required. Seats can be reserved for a 59 SEK fee, couchettes for a 269 SEK fee.

How to get there
You can reach Sweden by train from three countries:
- Denmark: Trains depart from Copenhagen for Malmö every 20 minutes. The train goes over the Öresund Bridge and arrives in Sweden in less than 30 minutes. Furthermore direct trains (SJ High Speed trains) leave from Copenhagen to Stockholm.
- Norway: There are main connections between Oslo and Stockholm and Gothenburg as well as connections between Trondheim - Åre - Östersund and Narvik - Kiruna - Boden - Stockholm.
- Germany: You can travel from Berlin to Malmö with the Berlin Night Express. Reservations are compulsory.
