Things to do in Bern

Panoramic view of Bern, Switzerland

Historical charm

Sat snug in a split of land within a crook of the Aare River, Bern is Switzerland’s fourth most populous city, as well as being the capital. Few cities have managed to preserve their historic allure as successfully as Bern. While away an afternoon in the medieval centre and check out the Münster – a 15th-century cathedral and its striking 12-metre stained glass window. From afar, the panoramic view of the cathedral’s tower and that of the Zytglogge (Clock Tower) soaring up in front of a backdrop of mountainous splendour is one you won’t forget.

The cathedral and the Clock Tower are a 10-minute walk from Bern’s main train station.

Shop ‘til you drop

Bern is home to one of Europe’s longest covered shopping promenades, the Kramgasse. With an impressive six kilometres of jam-packed arcades, it will leave shopaholics in a frenzy. An array of weird and edgy boutiques make it a window-shoppers heaven, for those who don’t want to break the bank. And best of all you can shop come rain or shine. Not to be missed is Bern’s craft market, held on the Münsterplatform every first Saturday (March to December). A few days spent in the enchanting Swiss capital and you’ll certainly be won over.

The craft market is a 15-minute walk from the main train station. The Kramgasse is a 10-minute walk from the same station.

Lovely lakeside castle

Located just 35 kilometres from the city of Bern is one of Switzerland’s most enchanting castles – Oberhofen castle, perched on the side of Lake Thun. First, explore the interior of this building that dates back to the Middle Ages, including the Historic Museum of Bern, which give an insight into Bernese life between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. Then spend some time relaxing in the beautiful English-style gardens. This lakeside garden on the shore of Lake Thun, provides spectacular vistas of the Alps.

The castle is a 15-minute walk from the Oberhofen train station.
