What is the difference between 1st and 2nd class?

The difference between 1^st and 2^nd class rail travel is the level of comfort and the facilities provided. 1^st class InterRail passes are more expensive than 2^nd class passes. Compare InterRail pass prices.

More space in 1^st class

Seats are usually larger and more comfortable, and there is more legroom in 1^st class coaches than in 2^nd  class. There is also greater luggage space. 1^st class coaches are almost always less crowded than 2^nd class.

Extras in 1^st class

On certain trains, 1^st class travellers may get the following, especially on high-speed trains:

• Complimentary drink and snack
• Free newspaper
• WiFi internet connection
• Power sockets

1^st class and 2^nd class passes

A 1^st class InterRail pass also entitles you to travel in 2^nd  class coaches. However, 2^nd class pass holders, must purchase an upgrade in order to travel 1^st class on a particular journey.

Norway only has 2^nd class coaches on all trains.
