Choose your level of comfort
The difference between 1st and 2nd class rail travel is the level of comfort and the facilities provided. 1st class InterRail passes are more expensive than 2nd class passes. Compare InterRail pass prices.
More space in 1st class
Seats are usually larger and more comfortable, and there is more legroom in 1st class coaches than in 2nd class. There is also greater luggage space. 1st class coaches are almost always less crowded than 2nd class.
Extras in 1st class
On certain trains, 1st class travellers may get the following, especially on high-speed trains:
- Complimentary drink and snack
- Free newspaper
- WiFi internet connection
- Power sockets
1st class and 2nd class passes
A 1st class InterRail pass also entitles you to travel in 2nd class coaches. However, 2nd class pass holders, must purchase an upgrade in order to travel 1st class on a particular journey.
Norway only has 2nd class coaches on all trains.
